LinkTe Awa Cycle - Final Archaeological ReportAlternative TitleTe Awa River Ride - Final Archaeological ReportTypeArchaeological ReportDetailsWSP (previously Opus International Consultant Ltd) were contracted by AECOM to monitor works and report on archaeological findings of the earthworks undertaken for the Te Awa River Ride Cycle Path Project, Horotiu, Waikato. This final report describes the results of the archaeological investigations of the Project in compliance of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga (HNZPT) Archaeological Authority 2016/1188 and 2017/326.
The investigations undertaken for the Te Awa Cycleway works in Horotiu, Waikato, resulted in the identification of a horticultural landscape with extensive and complex archaeology. The investigated portion of the archaeological site consisted of extensive gardening and domestic activities, in some case representing rare finds for the region. Extensive archaeological deposits continue to exist at the sites outside the previous areas of works. The lower layer of Area B at S14/484 is preserved below the cycleway.
This report recommends that:
• That any potential future ground disturbing works within archaeological sites S14/349 and S14/484 are undertaken with an Archaeological Authority;
• Any ground disturbing works in the wider area are reviewed by an archaeologist due to the continued potential of in-situ archaeological sites.Date22nd May 2025
